Addition So far we have discussed the single column method where we were dealing with each column separately but this can be made easier with the double column method.

In this method, we break up the numbers to be added in columns taking two numbers in each column. It will be more useful if you can break the numbers in multi of 10.

Example:-Add 16+49+194+66+21+24=?              Solution:-

Step:-1Here the complete observation shows us that 16+24 is likely to yield a rounded result, i.e. the unit digit is 0.

The same would be the case if 49 and 21 were paired. Moreover the pair 194 and 66 yields a rounded result. 

16+49+194+66+21+24

Step:2

Rearrange the pair and add as per the pairing done above.

=( 16+24+)+(49+21)+( 194+66 )
= 40+70+260
= ( 40+260 )+70
= 300+70
= 370

                                                               Example :- Add 216+159+94+36+41+54 = ?                                                                                             Solution :-                                                 Step:-1: Here the complete observation shows us that 216 + 94 is likely to yield a rounded result.

The same would be the case if 159 and 41 were paired. Moreover, the pair 94 and 26 yields a unit digit of 0.                                                                   216+159+94+36+41+54     

Step:-2

Rearrange the pair and add as per the pairing done above.

= ( 216+54 ) + ( 159+41 ) + ( 94+36 )
=  270+200+130
= ( 270+130 )+200
= 400+200
= 600

 Example : – Add  47+14+21+32 = ?   

Solution : – First break each number into multiples of 10 and a unit.   

47 14 21                                          32

 

( 40+7 ) ( 10+4 ) ( 20+1 ) ( 30+2 )

 Now apply the commutative property of addition and get the answer.                                                                           

= ( 40+10+20+30 ) + ( 7+4+1+2 )
= 100+14
= 114

Suppose you have add 2345+5768+8764+9127,we will break these numbers into two parts and keep adding two numbers by breaking each of them in multiples of 10 so that we can do the addition conveniently.
